The Kumbakonam, one of the special grade Municipal Towns of Tamil Nadu(india), is the second bigger town in Thanjavur District.It is located about 313 Kilometres away from Chennai on the south, about 90Kms. from Trichy on the east and about 40kms from Thanjavur on the North East. The town is bounded by two rivers - " River Cauvery" on the north and "River Arasalar" on the south.There are about 18 temples in the center of town dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Siva. There is also a Rare Brahma temple here. The Sarangapani Temple is one of the most important Vishnu temples in South India.so many Urchavas celebrated by temples through out the year. MasiMagam is celebrated in the tamil calendar month of "MASI" and "MAHAMAHAM" is celebrated once in twelve years. Lastly in the year 1992 MAHAMAHAM festival is celebrated.In olden days KUMBAKONAM is known as "THIRUKUDANTHAI" and "KUDAMOOKU". Kumbakonam is the heart of Tanjore district. Kumbakonam is a big town and familiar for business, production of Cotton and Silk Sarees, Brass Vessels, Gold Ornaments, Arts and Sculptures. The greatest Mathematician Ramanujam , Sir C.B.Ramaswamy Iyer, Advocate Alladi Krishnaswamy Iyer, U.V.Swamynadha Iyer, Srinivasa Sastriyar and Narayana Swamy Iyer are born in this town.A major festival is held at the sacred Mahamakam Tank once every 12 years, on the full moon day in the month of Magh (Jan/Feb), when Jupiter passes over Leo. At this time the waters of the Ganges, Yamuna, and seven other sacred rivers (Godavari, Kaveri, Krishna, Narmada, Saraswati, Tungabhadra, and Sarayu) are supposed to flow into the tank.

In a very small space, more than 900 students were studied. As there was no proper exit, 94 children lost their precious life in the fire accident. And 18 children were injured in stampede. In the memory of the children every year 16th July, the event called Motcha Deepam takes place in the evening in Kumbakonam.Memorial hall and Children’s park was set on the banks of Cauvery in Palakkairai in the memory of the children those who were dead in the fire accident. Irreligious paintings, Monuments created by the students of Kumbakonam fine arts college.As a monument to the "Anaya Deepam", this cruel event is an unforgettable tragedy among the people in Kumbakonam.
